Teen hurt in one-vehicle crash on Wednesday

A Schell City teenager was seriously injured in a single vehicle accident that happened about 5:45 p.m., Wednesday. The accident occurred seven miles west of Schell City on M Highway, when a westbound 1998 Mazda pickup driven by Seth M. Alexander, 16, traveled around a curve then ran off the west side of the roadway and overturned, according to a report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Alexander was not wearing a safety device and was transported to the Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., by ambulance. The vehicle was heavily damaged and was towed from the scene by the owner.

So when are we going to have drivers ed back in the schools? While this was cut years ago by budget issues everytime I see one of these stories I wonder would this have happened if they would have had driver ed? Of course this is made worse by the simple fact that he was not wearing his seat belt. A HWY patrolman once told me he had never cut a dead person from a seatbelt. Another plus is it would make us safer on the roads knowing these young people had have some formal training instead of just mom and dad giving them a few hours of instruction. From some of the adults driving in Nevada that is a scary thought.

I wonder, does this paper just make up its own story and print it? The boy was taken to Joplin not Kansas City and may be taken to St.L next. As for games end, I was once told by a patrolman that had I been wearing a seat belt I would not be alive today.

Really so you are the exception to the rule? There is a reason why wearing a belt is the law, there is a reason why airbags are now standard equipment.

But by all means do not wear a belt, after all you are "special", so when you get in a car crash I hope the last thing that goes through your head before the windsheild, is maybe I should have clicked it.

I feel sorry for the kid being in a accident. However, it was his choice not to wear a seatbelt, so my sympathy only goes so far. Can we blame his parents, friends, the school system? NO. In the end, it is his choice, it is not cool to wear seatbelts, so he didn't. There are plenty of TV commercials about wearing a seatbelt, and plenty of signs on the road. How about we hold him responsible for his actions, but holding a kid responsible is not something we do anymore.

As for his injuries, I hope he recovers and does well. Hopefully, he does not miss too much school and have to be held back. Good luck kid, just use your head next time when you jump behind the wheel.
