Cottey knocks off Fort Scott

IOLA, Kan. -- The Cottey College basketball team edged border rival Fort Scott Community College 68-64 on Saturday at the Allen County Classic in Iola, Kan.

The victory gave the Comets a split for the weekend, as the hosts topped the Comets on Friday at the Classic.

On Saturday against the Greyhounds, sophomore Santana Cruz led the way for the Comets with 17 points, while Jordan Davidson added 14 and Kylie Eldredge also reached double figures with 13.

Two others, Chelsey Rowland and Blaklee Sanders, just missed double figures with eight points apiece.

Coach Dave Ketterman's Comets led 37-28 at halftime. Eldredge scored 11 of her 13 in the first half, with three three-pointers.

The Greyhounds outscored the Comets 36-31 after intermission, but Cottey held on at the end for the victory. Cruz scored 14 in the second half.

Fort Scott High School graduate Jolee Sharp poured in 30 points for the Greyhounds.

Friday's result

Allen County defeated Cottey 64-48 on Friday night on the opening night of the Classic.

Cruz scored 22 points for the Comets.

Allen County's Red Devils held a slim 25-21 lead at the half, but then outscored the Comets 39-27 in the second half to secure the win.

Davidson also reached double figures for Cottey with 11 points. The Comets made just eight of 20 free throws.

Kayla Morton led three Devils in double figures with 17 points.

The Comets are now 2-1.

Cottey travels to Central Methodist tonight. Cottey will host Ozark Christian College on Thursday night at 6 p.m. at Hinkhouse Gym.
