Council to review zoning issue tonight

Tuesday, November 15, 2011

The Nevada City Council will be considering several new items during their regular meeting tonight at 7 in the council chambers in the Public Safety Building, 120 S. Ash St.

Among the items under consideration is a public hearing and the first reading of a special ordinance to change the zoning at 1415 N. Osage from M-1, light industrial, to M-2, heavy industrial, so a company can manufacture blades for wind turbines.

Last week, the planning commission recommended denial of the change, citing concerns about future industries that could locate in a site zoned M-2 should the wind turbine operations move from that location. M-2 zoning; which, among other things, would allow such things as rendering plants, salvage yards, chemical laboratories and explosives manufacturing.

The council also will consider a contract with Jerry Burch to act as a lobbyist for the city in Jefferson City, as well as ordinances to end the agreement with Vernon County for shared Internet and VoIP services and a lease with Union Pacific Railroad for a storage facility.

The council also will conduct a public hearing and considering the first reading of a special ordinance approving the application for a grant to cover part of the cost of the city's Fare Share Taxi Coupon program.

Other items on the agenda are the second reading of two ordinances. The first of thes is to finalize a contract with the Missouri Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. The second of these, if approved, will allow Nevada Habitat for Humanity to sell a piece of property given to them by the city and use the proceeds to build a house on more suitable property.
