BRONAUGH, Mo. -- The annual green vs. red Christmas matchup between Bronaugh and Hume produced two blowouts on Friday night.

Bronaugh sophomore Chance Wait and Hume senior Bobby Berry fight for possession of a rebound during Friday night's game in Bronaugh.

Led by its pressure defense and hot shooting, Bronaugh's boys in green cruised to a 70-30 win over red-clad Hume.

In the girls game, it was just the opposite. Hume had too much firepower and rolled to a 60-28 win.

Boys game

With its full-court press, the Wildcats forced countless Hume turnovers from the start and raced out to a 36-4 lead en route to the 40-point win.

"Our press worked well," Bronaugh Coach Jim Hillman said. "Our game plan was to stop (Bobby) Berry and I thought we did a good job of harassing him all night long. And our press just overwhelmed them."

Hillman added his team was definitely looking forward to this one. Friday's win was the first time Bronaugh has defeated Hume in six years.

"It was a great night for our kids," Hillman said. "It's been so long since we've beat them. They've beaten us like 20 games in-a-row. Our kids have been working really hard, so tonight's win is just a great reward for their hard work."

The Wildcats led 20-4 at the end of the first quarter and then scored the first 16 of the second to go up 36-4. The Wildcats then took off the full court press.

It was 39-7 at the half. Bronaugh's Josh Willis drained three three-pointers late in the third period and Bronaugh led 60-17 entering the fourth quarter.

Bronaugh's Willis and Patrick Hallam scored 17 points apiece to lead the Wildcats (2-3).

Willis drained five three's and Hallam hit three.

Blake Hudson added nine, Chance Wait scored eight and Nick Hoye chipped in seven. Hillman said his team's depth was another key to the win.

"We're a team," he said. "Every guy contributes."

A senior guard, Berry scored 13 for the Hornets.

Girls game

Hume's one-two punch of Emily Brooks and Makena Thompson proved to be too much for Bronaugh to handle.

A junior guard, Brooks scored 24 points and senior post player Thompson added 18 as the Hume girls rolled to 60-28 victory over the Wildcats.

"They work very well together," Hume Coach Delanya Thompson said. "They're a good combination. It helps that they've been playing together for a few years now."

With Brooks leading the attack, the Hornets pulled out to a 14-3 lead right away.

Hume's lead reached 20 at 30-10 late in the first half.

Bronaugh's turnovers led to easy hoops for the Hornets, and Brooks had back-to-back steals and layups to push the lead to 39-12.

The Hornets also were able to get a lot of points in the paint, as Thompson and Tori Sears did most of the damage. A junior, Sears scored 12 for the Hornets.

Hume led 47-21 when the third quarter ended.

Hume improves to 4-0 on the season with the victory.

"We could have played better," Coach Thompson said. "There's always room for improvement."

Bronaugh was led by RaeAnn Mader's 12 points.

Note: Hume's girls beat Rich Hill 57-44 on Thursday. Sears scored 15 and Thompson scored 12 and grabbed 14 boards.

Rich Hill easily won the boys game 80-18.
