APPLETON CITY -- The Hume High School girls basketball team won the Appleton City Tournament with a 73-69 double overtime victory over Sherwood on Saturday.
"The girls played great as a team," Hume Coach Delanya Thompson said. "They worked hard and gave it their all."
Thompson said she had two of her starters foul out after regulation and had to go to her bench.
"I am very proud of the effort these girls put forward and the composure they showed playing a team with twice as many players, who were also much bigger than we are. All-around it was a great game."
Makena Thompson scored 35 points and pulled down 15 rebounds. Makena made eight of 12 field goals and connected on 16 of 22 free throws. Thompson's steal and layup sent the game into a second OT. Emily Brooks, the team's point guard, added 18 points, seven assists and three steals. Tori Sears added 11 points for the Hornets (7-2).
Coach Thompson credited Kaitlee Metcalf with hitting a key three-pointer and added Hope Yarick played solid defense, while Abby Yarick hit some key free throws.
Added Thompson: "Hannah Jacobs and Sears contained their big girls and out-rebounded them. Emily hit a three in OT and broke their press efficiently."
