Penny drive for scholarships to take place next week

Thursday, January 19, 2012

The students, parents, and staff of Bryan Elementary School will be collecting pennies through the week of Jan. 23-27, in observance of the 100th day of school, which is Jan. 26. All pennies collected each day will be counted and sorted by the kindergarten and first grade students. At the end of each day, the pennies will be deposited in the Bryan School Lucille Smith Scholarship Fund. This year's kindergarten class will add to their scholarship fund as first graders during next year's 100th day celebration. Both scholarships will be awarded through the Nevada R-5 Scholarship Foundation and will earn interest until the students are high school seniors in the years 2023 and 2024. All students who were members of the Bryan School classes at the time the pennies were collected will be eligible to apply for the scholarships. Anyone wishing to make a penny donation can do so at the Bryan School office, 400 W. Lee Street; or they may send it to school with any Bryan school student. Since the beginning of the project, 12 scholarships have been awarded.
