Hazel Leucille "Lucy" Jay
Hazel Leucille "Lucy" Jay, 89, of Altoona, Kan., formerly of Hume, Mo., died Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, at Wilson Medical Center, Neodesha, Kan.
She was born Oct.11, 1922, in Hume, Mo., the daughter of Harley and Willie Ruth Handly Kleitz.
Lucille went to grade school in Hume, Mo., and junior high and high school in Kansas City, Mo.
She was a homemaker, learning all of the art of canning, baking and making candies. She loved flowers, especially her tulips and iris and enjoyed watching the birds. In her motherhood she reared her children in the country. The farming included milking cows on a dairy farm, raising cattle, growing crops to feed the cattle and huge vegetable gardens to feed the children.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Dawson Williams, Lloyd Pilcher and James Jay; one son, Jim Williams; one daughter, Judy Hampton; one brother, John Kleitz; two sisters, Helen Bradley and Mary Belle; and a grandchild, Kaleigh.
Survivors include four sons, Mike Williams and Sally of Nevada, John Williams and Cathy of Liberal, Mo., Bill Williams and Katie of Milo, Mo., and Harold Pilcher and Irmie of Elgin, Okla.; four daughters, Shirley Sumner of Lamar, Mo., Maggie Stout of Lenexa, Kan., Kathy Louvier and Ed of Nevada, and Sarah Fay and Ron of Topeka, Kan.; 26 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren and three "on the way."
Services will be held at noon, Saturday, March 3, at the Hume Christian Church, Hume, Mo. Visitation will be from 11 a.m., until service time, at the church.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Hume Christian Church or Wilson Medical Center.
