Busy week ends with another win for Tigers

EL DORADO SPRINGS --With this week's busy schedule, it's safe to say the Nevada High School baseball team knows what the major leaguers feel like.
Playing for the fourth time in as many days, the Tigers completed a long week with a solid 9-1 win over rival El Dorado Springs on Thursday.
"This has been a major league-type stretch," Nevada Coach Marty Atnip said. "And I really think our pitching held up. When you have four games in four days, you need good pitching. And for the most part, we had pretty solid starting pitching all week."
That was the case once again on Thursday.
A senior lefty, Bubba Banes got the win on the mound for the Tigers.
He struck out nine, and allowed just four hits and five walks in six innings on the bump.
"Bubba worked himself out of a few jams," Atnip said. "He was able to get a key strikeout when he needed it."
While Banes did his part on the mound, Lane Ketterman led the way at the plate.
A sophomore switch-hitting outfielder, Ketterman went three-for-five at the plate with two RBIs. Ketterman was a home run short of hitting for the cycle, as he had a single, double and triple.
"Lane had a good game for us, especially at the plate," Atnip said.
Atnip was pleased with his team's performance overall against the Bulldogs.
"We played solid baseball," said Atnip. "We got some clutch hits. We hit the ball pretty well, especially early. When you do that, pitch well and play defense, you're going to be solid."
Nevada got on the board in the first inning, as Ketterman doubled and later came home on an Alex Payne RBI single.
Ketterman hit a two-run triple in the second.
With the Tigers up 3-1 in the fourth, Easton Mitchell hit a two-run double for a 5-1 lead. In the same inning, Cole Sanderson drove in another run with a single.
Another run came home on an El Dorado Springs error, making it 7-1.
Banes then drove in two with a line drive to left, giving his team a 9-1 advantage.
The run support was more than enough for Banes.
The Bulldogs did have chances in the fifth and sixth, but stranded two on each time as Banes was able to get a strikeout to end both innings.
The hosts had a chance in the bottom of the seventh against relief pitcher Grant Wolfe, but a double play ended the game when third baseman Bradey Denney snagged a line drive and touched third for the final out of the game.
Nevada is now 10-5 on the season with the win. The team went 8-11 a year ago, so the team has already surpassed last year's win total.
The Tigers won three of four this week. Nevada will have another busy week coming up. The Tigers head to Carl Junction on Monday, host El Dorado Springs on Tuesday and then host Sherwood on Wednesday in a make-up game. The Tigers then head to Fort Scott on Friday, April 27 for a date with their border rivals.
But like the pros in the majors, a busy week is now nothing new to the Tigers.
