Local students testify on state bills

Friday, May 11, 2012

On April 18, Nevada High School Freshmen Action students traveled to Jefferson City to testify on behalf of two bills. Students researched and followed the bills as part of their civics class. The bills, SB599 and HB1062, both require school districts to include in their school accountability report cards whether they have a gifted education program and the percentage and number of students enrolled. Students chose Carly Greer to represent them, and she spoke to both the Senate Education Committee and the House Elementary and Secondary Committee in support of the bills. SB599 was passed by both the House Elementary and Secondary Committee and the House Rules Pursuant Committee and needs to be voted on by the House. While in Jefferson City, the students also had an opportunity to visit Rep. Barney Fisher. He answered their questions, showed them around the capitol building, arranged a tour of the whisper chamber and top of the dome, and introduced them on the House floor.
