SOLD! Man buys historic structure for $35,000

Above, a crowd gathers for a county surplus auction Thursday afternoon, many of them anxious to see what was to become of the former Nevada Post Office, which later housed the Vernon County Sheriff's Office and Jail, sold at absolute auction.

Jime Earnest of Town and Country Auction Service stands on the steps of the structure at 230 W. Cherry St., and takes final bids. Out of more than 100 registered bidders at the sale, which also offered a variety of county surplus items, only two bid on the historic building that was completed in 1910. Joe Barker of Nevada got the bidding started at $30,000. Another bidder got involved, but not for long. Barker bought the building, its contents and lot for $35,000. Barker has no immediate plans for the structure or grounds. He said simply, "it was cheap."

We pray he is able to do something positive with this building. Nevada def. doesn't need another money loan place or anymore parking lots--we seem to have plenty of those.

hclark76's hubby I woulld hate to see it made in to a parking lot. I hope somewhere it is on a historical land mark book.and yes it would be heart breaking to see it gone.. But the man who paid for it well its his money and i do feel if you own it thats his call. giving the fact that it sold so cheap this could be a red flag on how much there is wrong with this build.. on the other hand I do think it would make a great new city jail/police station. yes this would take money to redo and upgrade the whole building but we would still have our history.. old places buildings are reminders of the hard work and pride we had and still have today.. anyway just saying i hope the best to the new owners and may your plans bring happiness to you and yours

Clark may be right about the history issue, but he is wrong about the parking lot idea. They have had to put up road blocks and fences to keep people from parking there. Barker could probably get his money back just charging for parking passes, without touching the building. It would be nice to see some kind of restoration with a purpose go on though, and it is a prime location.

I will omit they do need more parking space down town but not at the cost of history and we all know the main business that could use a bigger parking lot and how it would help them a lot im sure lol but the facts are still the same this place needs to be like it is fixed up yes but left as a building not a parking lot

It would be great to honor history as Spans says. I hope Mr Barker can do this, as I realize the expense refurbishment will be especially with out a prospective tenant/buyer wonder if the city could put the police in their after a renovation that would sure be cheaper than the proposed new safety center?
