The Nevada Planning Commission voted 6-0, with Commissioner Jeff Tweten excused, to send a positive recommendation to the city council for an easement in the 800 block of West Hickory from the Nevada R-5 School District to allow the city to install a a fiber-optic cable.

"This is the best route to get to the water treatment plant," Mark Mitchell, IT director for the city of Nevada, told the commission.

Mitchell said that this will also facilitate connecting the high school's communication system to other school district buildings.

Mitchell said the fiber connection also will serve a public safety purpose. Should the police need to respond to an incident in the schools, having the cable in place will allow Nevada police to connect to the school district's closed circuit cameras from the computer terminals in their cars and assess the situation before they arrive at the site.

The Nevada R-5 Board of Education approved the easement at a special June 28 meeting.
