Congressman Todd Akin, a U.S. senatorial candidate, makes a campaign stop at the Iguana Azul in Nevada on Monday, to speak to nearly 50 Republican supporters. Akin gave the group of local businessmen, political figures and citizens some biographical information before telling the crowd he was "rated as the most conservative congressman in Missouri" Akin said he voted against No Child Left Behind, an increase in the debt ceiling and TARP. Akin said, "if you can't put principle in front of politics, you shouldn't be in that office." His comment of "just get us out of the United Nations" drew a good round of applause from the audience. Before taking questions, Akin said, "I've tried to show you a record of standing on principles and leading with courage."
Akin is running against fellow Republicans Jerry Beck Sarah Steelman, John G. Brunner,
Mark Memoly, Mark Patrick Lodes, Robert (Bob) Poole and Hector Maldonado in the Aug. 7 primary election.
The incumbent, Senator Claire McCaskill, is the lone Democrat on the Aug. 7 ballot. Jonathan Dine is the lone Libertarian candidate in the primary.
