Seattle Studs drop Griffons

WICHITA, Kan. -- The Seattle Studs lived up to their name last night and handed the Nevada Griffons a 7-0 loss in their second game of the 78th annual National Baseball Congress World Series at Lawrence-DuMont Stadium. The Griffons, now 1-1 in the World Series, move into the losers bracket in the double-elimination tournament and are scheduled to play the Omaha Strike Zone at 8 a.m. today in an elimination game.

Seattle's Damon Porter kept the Griffons scoreless during his 5 2/3 innings, giving up two hits and one walk, while striking out five for the win.

Roland Ochoa, who took the loss for the Griffons, gave up three runs, walked four and struck out one in his three innings on the mound.

Ron Johnson threw two innings in relief, giving up one run on two hits with one strikeout.

Jake Heissler pitched the final four innings for the Griffons, allowing three runs on four hits and striking out one.

Robbe Ewing, Mac Grace and Brad Wilson led the Griffons in hitting with one double each.

While the Griffons remained runless, the Studs picked up three runs in the third on a double by Caleb Brown, a single by Bobby Tannehill and a walk by Jeff Hart.

The Studs added one run in the fifth, two more in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Seattle will play the El Dorado Broncos in the feature game at 7:30 tonight.


NOTES -- MINK League champion St. Joseph faces the Dodge City (Kan.) A's this evening at 5 p.m. The Mustangs last played Tuesday night, when they shut out the Tulsa Braves, 8-0....

The only other representative from Missouri, the Plaza Tire Capahas from Cape Girardeau, lost their games in the tournament. They were eliminated by San Diego, 5-2, Friday in the game before the Griffons'....
