Filing for council seat closes today

The deadline to file as a candidate for the Nevada City Council, to finish the unexpired term of Sherry Steward, who left the office July 31 because she was moving outside the city, is 5 p.m., today.

So far, two candidates, Mike Smith and Lance Christie, have thrown their hats into the ring. A special election is scheduled for Dec. 2; if additional candidates file today, that election will become a primary, narrowing the field to two, and another election will take place on Feb. 5.
