Former Nevada football coach dies at 83

Dan Clopton, 83, of Springfield, Mo., passed away on Oct. 13, 2012. He was reared in Aurora, Mo. In 1947, he graduated from Aurora High School. After serving five years in the United States Air Force, he married his wife of 58 years, Jo Akin. Dan was an educator in the public school system for 31 years. He served on several community boards and devoted his life to education and athletics by coaching and officiating for more than 50 years, including two years as head football coach at Nevada High School in 1962 and '63.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Tom, and sister, Eloise.

He is survived by his loving wife, Jo; three wonderful children, Dana (Mark) LaMair; Dawn O'Dell and Scott Clopton; brother, Maurice; sister, Mary Eubanks; grandchildren, Cory, Cristen, Cara, Laura, Amelia, Georgia, Deborah, Julia, (James) and Taylor; and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, Oct. 17, from 5 to 7 p.m., in the Klingner-Cope Family Funeral Home at Rivermonte, 4500 S. Lone Pine, Springfield, Mo. A funeral service will be held Thursday, Oct. 18, at 10 a.m., in Klingner-Cope Family Funeral Home Chapel.
