James Robert McCarthy
James Robert McCarthy, 84, Nevada, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at Medicalodge in Nevada, following a lengthy illness. He was born on Aug. 4, 1928, in Chillicothe, Mo., to Nolan Francis McCarthy and Coila Lafferty McCarthy. He married Bernice Elizabeth McCoy November 1949 in Hawaii and she preceded him in death. He later married Mildred McCoy in Nevada, and she also preceded him in death.
James was raised in Nevada and graduated from Nevada High School in 1946. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1948 and served for 20 years including tours of duty in Korea and Vietnam. James was a member of the Nevada VFW Post No. 2175, the American Legion Post No. 2, and the Nevada Elks Lodge No. 564. He loved to hunt and fish. James always grew a large garden. He raised a lot of tomatoes and gave them all away and never ate it himself. He was known for baking bread and delivering them to people in the community. For years he provided food every Sunday to the Elks Lodge. Some of the family favorites were Hawaiian rice pockets and teriyaki steak.
Survivors include three children, Frank McCarthy and his wife, Janie, Glennville, Ga., Blanche French and her husband, Marvin, Judith Gap, Mont., and Coila Adams and her husband, Kit, Denver, Colo.; nine grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Virginia Peters, Chillicothe, Blanche Wagoner, Kansas City, Mo., and Mary Prewitt, Walker, Mo.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; both wives; one son, James N. McCarthy; one daughter, Sunday Bernice Righter; and two brothers, Leo McCarthy and Don McCarthy.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 14, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, with the Rev. David Rorabaugh officiating. Friends may call now and until the hour of service at the funeral home.
