Cottey Comets softball swept at East Central College

UNION, Mo. -- Since inclement weather wouldn't allow the Cottey College Comets softball team to play the doubleheader that was scheduled for Friday afternoon against East Central College at Vanek Family Memorial Field, the matchup was moved to the Falcons' home field instead.
The Falcons took full advantage of being on their home field, sweeping both games. In the opener, the Comets were unable to mount any offense and the Eagles took the game by a final score of 8-0.
The second game of the day was a much closer affair, but head coach Shelli Stanley's Comets were still unable to get over the hump and ultimately fell by a final score of 6-5.
With those losses, the Comets' record fell to 2-4 on the season.
The Comets were scheduled to be back in action on Saturday, against Independence Community College, but that twinbill was called off due to weather. The Comets were also scheduled to be in action tomorrow, traveling to Kansas City, Kan., to take on KCK Community College, but those games have been called off as well.
Next on the schedule for Cottey is Friday, when the Comets host Fort Scott Community College. Should the Comets get to play that day, there are a number of special festivities planned in conjunction with the games.
According to Comets administrative assistant Marla Kannady Foreman, a dedication ceremony in honor of Dorothy Vanek, who donated the money to build the field, will be held before the start of the first game of the day at 2 p.m. A "limited amount" of T-shirts will be given to fans before the ceremonies begin and the dedication is set for 1:45 p.m.
No plans have been made for possible rescheduling of Friday's events, should that become necessary.
