Two people injured in house fire
Two people were injured in house fire Thursday night at 219 S. Adams St. in Nevada.
Fire Chief Bill Thornton said the two people were in the house but had been taken to Nevada Regional Medical Center before firefighters and police officers arrived at the scene.
"They are gone," he said.
Thornton said the two suffered "life threatening injuries" and were transferred to another facility. He did not know where the two were taken.
Two helicopters had been summoned to airlift the injured, but the chief said the pilots had to turn back because of the thunderstorm that moved into the area before midnight. They ended up being transported by ambulance during the night.
The identities of the two injured was not released, but Thornton said both were adults. Firefighters were called to the scene at 10:19 p.m. Thursday and found flames and heavy smoke coming through the roof when they arrived at the scene. Thornton said firefighters entered the residence and were able to contain the blaze to the second floor.
Eleven firefighters and three vehicles were used to bring the fire under control within an hour. Damage was $60,000.
Thornton said the fire is believed to have been accidental, although a specific cause has not yet been released. The fire was still being investigated Friday evening.
