Red Sox season opener postponed

Thursday, June 6, 2013

The Nevada Red Sox AA American Legion baseball team was scheduled to get the 2013 season under way Thursday afternoon with a district game against Warrensburg, but as has happened on several occasions to other teams around Nevada already this summer, Mother Nature had other plans.

After it was determined that the field at Champion Diamonds was still too wet to be playable due to recent heavy rainfall across the area, Red Sox head coach Jerrod Alexander spent the majority of the day Thursday attempting to find a different place for his squad to play, but those efforts ultimately didn't yield any results. By rule, the game must be rescheduled since Nevada and Warrensburg are in the same district, but no word as to when that might happen was available at press time Thursday.

"The problem for me is -- and it's why I only have a small amount of games scheduled -- I've got eight kids that play on weekend traveling teams, three that play in the Midwest baseball academy in springfield, and five young kids that still play USSSA baseball with the Midwest Athletics, so they use the weekends and it's tough to schedule games around that," Alexander said. "And I have football camp the last week of June, with the high school program."

Next on the schedule for the Red Sox is Friday, when they head out on the road for the first time this season to take on Fort Scott. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m.
