Commissioners set price to house Jasper County inmates
Vernon County Commissioners approved a contract during its Wednesday meeting to house Jasper County inmates in Vernon County jail.
According to the contract, the Vernon County Sheriff's Office will charge Jasper County $35 a day hold inmates facing misdemeanor or felony charges.
The Vernon County Sheriff's Office also will provide one trip per week -- on Fridays -- from the Vernon County jail to the Jasper County jail to transport inmates to and from the Vernon County jail. All other charges will be absorbed by Jasper County.
The Vernon County Sheriff also retains the right to refuse to house any inmate. In such a case, the sheriff will notify the Jasper County sheriff in writing.
Implementation of the contract is now waiting on Jasper County's approval.
Northern Commissioner Neal Gerster said the commission also voted to reduce the amount Jasper County owed for past inmate housing.
Sheriff Jason Mosher said the settlement would be $14 per day.
In other business, some residents reported washouts on the roads from recent storms.
The commissioners inspected and identified roads in order to start the repair process.
