Third Nevada Triathlon to be held Aug. 24
Athletes from around the area will converge on Nevada, on Aug. 24, to take part in the third annual Nevada Triathlon.
In its second year, the event saw impressive growth with participant numbers surpassing 70. In anticipation of continued growth this year, the event has been moved to the Walton Family Aquatic Center and has become a Parks and Recreation event.
Healthy Nevada has signed on as the event's major sponsor, making professional race timing possible. Entry fee's are approximately half the price of triathlons elsewhere, but the event is just as professionally run as any other event.
The triathlon consists of a 300-yard swim, 12-mile bike ride, and 5K run. Participants will be able to see swim, bike and run times separately, as well as total combined times.
Awards will be given based on combined total time for male and female overall winners, as well as age group winners. The event will be open to two- and three-person teams, as well as individual entries.
In addition to professional timing and awards all entrants will receive a long sleeved T-shirt. The pool will also remain open for one hour after the event, free of charge, so participants can cool off on the slides and diving boards.
A new addition this year is a timed kids triathlon. Children ages 5-14 will have the opportunity to participate in a timed, professional triathlon in which they swim, bike, and run distances based on their age.
Those events will also be timed in the same fashion as the adults and in addition to finishers' medals, awards will be given to the top three finishers in each of five, two-year age groups. Just like the adults, some children come for the competition, but most simply come to have fun and gain the satisfaction of completing a triathlon.
No special equipment is needed for the children's events and any bicycle will be appropriate. Life jackets are welcome, as well as training wheels.
The only requirement is that children must wear a helmet while on the bike and have fun. Children will also receive a short sleeved T-shirt with their entry.
Volunteers are needed to help make the day's events run smoothly. All volunteers are sure to enjoy the events and will also receive a free T-shirt.
Registration for both triathlon events is open now through the day of the events. Early registration discounts are available through July 1.
