Man arrested on drug charge

A cooperative effort of the Vernon County Sheriff's Office and the Community Narcotics Enforcement Team Drug Task Force has taken another alleged drug dealer off the streets of Nevada.
On Tuesday deputies arrested David E. Perkey, 56, of Nevada on a class B felony charge of distribution of a controlled substance after Perkey allegedly accepted delivery of four eight-balls -- about 14 grams or half an ounce -- of methamphetamine that he is accused of buying from an undercover task force agent.
Vernon County Sheriff Jason Mosher said his office had been getting information about meth-amphetamine being sold out of Perkey's 301 W. Hunter St. residence for some time, but didn't have enough for a warrant. Then, a confidential informant told deputies that a deal was about to happen and deputies were able to put themselves in the middle of it.
Mosher said Perkey had never seen this particular supplier, so when he called to set up delivery, he had no idea he was talking to a task force agent. The task force agent let Perkey choose the time and place of the exchange and they pre-positioned deputies in the area to the north, south and west. The meeting was set to happen in the small graveled area on the northeast part of Walker Corner, at the intersection of U.S 54 Highway and C Highway.
Perkey was waiting when the undercover agent arrived. Mosher said the agent was wired with a recording device and had an open phone to the sheriff, so everything could be closely monitored and documented.
Court documents allege Perkey told the agent he was 56-years-old and on disability and does "this to make extra money."
The agent told Perkey he would give him the methamphetamine for which he had already paid and let him have three more on credit. Perkey allegedly replied that he could get rid of that in a couple of days and be willing to meet again but at a different location.
Perkey also allegedly warned the agent about meeting in the Butler area like he wanted to because of a K-9 unit working the highway in Bates County.
After the drugs exchanged hands, Mosher said, deputies moved in and took both men out of the vehicle.
"Perkey had the bag of methamphetamine in his left shirt pocket," court documents state. Perkey was placed under arrest and taken to the Vernon County Jail, where he remained Wednesday in lieu of a $100,000 cash-only bond.
