A third suspect in the alleged theft of more than $30,000 from a Nevada man's bank account surrendered Tuesday and was arrested, Vernon County Sheriff Jason Mosher said.
Brittani L. McDaniel, 23, of Nevada turned herself in at the sheriff's office, Mosher said. McDaniel is faced with a single felony count of stealing.
The sheriff said since McDaniel is nine months pregnant and due to deliver any time, the judge and prosecutor agreed to release her on her own recognizance. If left in custody, McDaniel is a medical liability. Being pregnant and so close to deliver also makes her a low flight risk.
McDaniel is charged in connection with the alleged theft of $31,698.90 from the bank account of a Nevada man, along with her parents, Glenn and Linda Underwood of Richards. The alleged thefts occurred between November of 2011 and April of 2013.
The alleged victim filed a complaint about the missing money with the sheriff's office on April 10, telling investigator Steve Schlup more than $30,000 was missing from his bank account at Metz Bank in Nevada.
Working with bank officials, Schlup was able to determine payments had been made to Verizon Wireless, KCP&L, Credit One Bank, Wells Fargo, American Family Insurance and other companies. By retracing the payment log, investigators allegedly found the names of the Underwood couple and McDaniel on those accounts.
Police contend Glenn Underwood got the other man's bank account number and routing number off a check the man wrote him in 2011 and he and his wife and daughter used the numbers to access the account and pay personal bills. The man denied authorizing any of the transactions, which occurred over 1 1/2 years.
Linda Underwood allegedly said the whole matter was a "mistake," while Glen Underwood claimed they were being set up by the other man.
At one point, according to the court documents, Glen Underwood and McDaniel contacted the other man and attempted to get him to meet with them and work out a way to pay back the money so he wouldn't press charges.
During interviews last month, Linda Underwood refused to talk about her husband and claimed responsibility for the theft. When asked about her husband's involvement she stated, "[P]lease let me take the blame." Other than that she refused to answer or avoided answering anything about his involvement, the documents state.
The Underwoods are being held in the Vernon County Jail, each in lieu of a $10,000 cash only bond.
