The Nevada City Council announced Tuesday they have hired long-time city finance employee Kristie Modlin as the new city treasurer, effective Aug. 1.

The treasurer is one of three city employees hired directly by the city council. The other two are the city manager and the city clerk.

Modlin, who has a bachelor's in business administration, started in the city's finance department in 2000 as a cashier and business license officer and worked her way up to finance manager.

"I'm looking forward to it," she said.

Modlin said that the city is about ready to start working on the 2014 budget, which is her favorite time of the year.

That is when the treasurer takes a look at each department's needs and the justification for those needs and working with the city manager and the city council sets a plan for the upcoming year on how to fill those needs within the constraints of the available money.

She said that in recent years she has spent a lot of time working on preparing the city's annual budget.

Modlin said she feels comfortable about taking on this responsibility.

"I have the full support of the council," she said adding the council is willing to hire Mike Wade, the last city treasurer, to provide any assistance she may need.

"I'm ready to take the step," Modlin said.

Mike Wade resigned as city treasurer, Dec. 31, 2012, to take a full-time position with the city of Joplin and the council has been looking for a replacement since then.
