More than 100 elementary students will get a boost in technology education when the Hume R-8 School District purchases approximately 50 Chrome Books with a $14,995 grant from the Small, Rural School Achievement program.
Superintendent David Quick said during the Sept. 11 Hume School Board meeting he is checking with vendors.
Principal Kirk Hart commended three students, Kaitlee Metcalf, Kelsie Wikoff and Hope Yarick, for receiving a scholarship from the Bates County Advocacy group to help with the tuition cost of dual credit/college classes at the meeting.
Enrollment increased by six students from last year with 102 students in elementary and 72 in high school, Hart said.
Assistant principal Scott Morrison recommended Justin Wehar for the position of head basketball coach at the meeting. Wehar has a masters in physical education and recreation and a minor in social sciences, he said.
The board voted 6-0 to approve Wehar as coach. The board also unanimously voted to amend the budget by transferring $16,000 from Fund 1 to Fund 4 to cover capital expenditures and adopt policy 2240, which addresses nonresident student transfers.
Quick told the board he will meet with a representative from Survive a Storm, a shelter building company. He said he will ask if the school would be able to use its FEMA grant to pay for the project.
"A 10-foot by 48-foot shelter house would fit 97 adults sitting, plus 30 adults standing," he said.
Quick said construction projects in the school are progressing. The shelves in the library have been built. The wall separating Title I and special education classrooms is being constructed. Once the ground settles from trenching, workers will pour concrete at the west side of the library. The plumbing problem with the drains in the new restrooms has been fixed.
