Bomb found after traffic stop described as 'IED'
Vernon County Sheriff Jason Mosher said late Friday afternoon that a warrant has been issued for Stormy Miller charging him with possession of a controlled substance, possession of an explosive weapon, and unlawful use of a weapon. Mosher said the Missouri Highway Patrol Bomb Squad was called out Tuesday night after an explosive device was located when Sheriff's Deputies arrested Miller.
Sheriff Mosher said the bomb squad called the device an "IED" capable of causing physical injury or death. Mosher said Miller was asked about the explosive device during an interview and Miller told investigators what his intentions were with the device, although the sheriff said he could not give out that information.
The bomb squad took an X-ray of the device before performing a procedure that made the bomb "safe." Mosher said he could not release any specifics about how the bomb was made but that a sample of the powder contained in the bomb has been sent to the Missouri State Crime Lab for analysis.
Mosher said the ATF was also notified about the device and has been working with Vernon County investigators. Mosher declined to comment on whether or not this would become a federal case. The sheriff said he was just glad they were able to recover the device and the weapon before anyone was hurt.
Mosher said that stolen property has also been recovered at an undisclosed county address and that charges are expected to be filed from both the Vernon County Sheriff's Office and the Nevada Police Department in the near future. "We have been working with the Nevada Police Department on several thefts that involve both agencies," said Mosher. "Most of the time when we find drugs we find stolen property as well." Mosher said that Miller has been a suspect in the thefts for quite some time and had ran from Sheriff's Deputies as well as Nevada Police Officers over the last few weeks. Although Mosher would not give any specifics about what type of property has been recovered, he did state that the value was in the thousands. Mosher said Sheriff's Deputies and Nevada Police Investigators continue to work on the case.
