Capt. Robert Benn, left, and Nevada Fire Chief Bill Thornton, far right, look on as Nevada Mayor Seth Barrett presents a proclamation to Fire Pup in recognition of Fire Prevention Week during Tuesday night's city council meeting. According to the National Fire Protection Association, fires killed more than 2,500 people in the United States in 2011 and fire departments in the U.S. responded to 370,000 home fires. According to the proclamation, cooking is the leading cause of home fires in the U.S., with fire departments responding to more than 156,000 annually between 2007 and 2011.
