Large crowd at McGennis barbecue

The McGennis Youth Center annual barbecue and auction raised $10,300 this year, leaving organizers "thrilled.
"The weather helped," pointed out Katie Bell. "We went above and beyond what we wanted to accomplish.
"We had the largest number in years in attendance, with 185 taking part in the meal and our largest group of kids in a long time as well."
The barbecue and auction is the largest fundraiser for the MYC, which also benefits from a food stand at the Rich Hill Fourth of July celebration and an annual 5K. This year's run is Oct. 19, in Rich Hill.
Registrants can visit the Rich Hill Fourth of July Facebook page or the McGennis Youth Center Facebook page, as well as the Food Fair and Security Bank locations.
There will be four divisions for adults, with a men's and women's category and ages 18-30, 31-44, 45-59, and 60-plus.
There are also age groupings for boys and girls 13-17. The 7-12 age group does a half-mile run, with the 2-6 age group a 100-meter run.
There will be prizes for the first-place winners in each division.
The center also includes the old Barn Theatre, a local community group, which puts on a play each summer, for three nights in August.
Money also comes from donations for the not-for-profit center, which was established in 1965. The 160-acre complex of land donated by Mary McGennis houses an old schoolhouse that was restored in 2012, four camping cabins, two shelter houses, a chapel that can host weddings, and a swimming area in the lake that is open during the summer.
