For the first time the Vernon County Sheriff's Office will provide a six-month internship for people in the community interested in gaining law enforcement environment experience.

"This is a way to help people to get their foot in the door," Sheriff Jason Mosher said.

The one day a week intern would mainly work with data entry and file removal.

"We have to look up the cases each time we want to know what resulted from arrests," Mosher said. "We want to update our system so it matches case net and make background research faster."

Mosher said the jail files have also piled up over several years and need to be disposed of.

The intern must be 21 and currently be enrolled in a criminal justice program or academy to qualify.

"We're always looking for ways to involve the community in what we do," Mosher said. "In the future we will look into starting an Explorers program so younger kids can learn what we do."
