Happiness tree planted
The Nevada Parks and Recreation Department director, Dana Redburn, recently announced the first light has been placed on the Community Happiness Tree in recognition of Cottey College students and faculty for their random acts of kindness in assisting the parks and recreation staff plan and execute the Happiness Project.
The Happiness Project began when the Franklin P. Norman City/County Com-munity Center staff decided they wanted to expand the Superheroes of Kindness program to others within the community. After hearing about Cottey's Happiness Challenge, it was determined it would be a great way to introduce the simplicity of attaining happiness through kindness. Through-out the planning process, community center supervisor Amy Thornton was in contact with Cottey students and faculty who developed a workshop to teach youth within the community the importance of random acts of kindness, recognizing gratitudes and regular exercise. Local youth learned the importance of working together and how success is attained through happiness.
The happiness tree was planted on the west side of the Franklin P. Norman City/County Community Center and will serve to recognize those within the community who demonstrate random acts of kindness. Anyone wishing to nominate an individual or group they feel should be recognized can contact Dana Redburn, parks and recreation director, at the com-munity center, 417-448-2740.
