Eleven preschoolers flooded into the office of The Nevada Daily Mail to bestow a special honor on editor Ralph Pokorny on Thursday afternoon.

The class from St. Mary's gave Pokorny his very own red cape with newsprint heart and designated him a fellow Superhero of Kindness.

"I'm pleased," Pokorny said. "I think it's a neat program. All superheros have to have a cape."

Superheros of Kindness teaches children the importance of kindness by encouraging them to give colored hearts and capes to people in service throughout the community. Based on the book "Have you filled your bucket today?" the program started at the Missoula Community School in Montana.

The Community Center started its own version two years ago.

"The great thing about this program is those kids understand this," director of parks and recreation Dana Redburn said. "They understand making people feel better. Ralph's gift was special. They gave him colored pictures of owls and a framed picture of the class. The kids just love Ralph. They can't wait to see him. He covers almost all of the community activities and takes fantastic pictures."

Redburn makes the capes the children wear and the fabric is donated through Nine Patch.

"Every year is different because it's a different bunch of kids," Pokorny said. "I don't think I've ever seen them go anywhere that they weren't welcome."
