'Dressin' for Dad' still needs dresses

Amy Thornton, Franklin P. Norman City/County Community director, said Monday that they still need dresses, shoes and costume jewelry for girls between 5 and 10 years old to make "Dressin for Dad" on Jan. 25, successful.
This event is to help the young ladies in the area get ready for a night with their fathers.
The plan is to turn the small gymnasium in the community center into a boutique where the girls attending the Second Annual Father-Daughter Dance on Feb. 8, can come and shop for a nice dress and try it on in the fitting rooms, as well as find shoes and jewelry to wear to the dance.
"We've got some really cute dresses for teens, but not very many for younger girls," Thornton said.
She said one woman not only donated several dresses, but also costume jewelry to go with each dress.
Any donations need to be delivered to the community by Friday, Jan. 17.
Thornton said there are several other activities coming up at the community center in the next couple of weeks.
* On Jan. 15 the community center will be holding a six-week cooking class for teens. Tammy Roberts, nutrition and health education specialist for the University of Missouri Extension, will conduct "Cooking Matters for Teens," which connects health, nutrition and hands-on experience in the kitchen.
Thornton said the parks department had held cooking classes for younger children last year, but not one directed at teens. She said the enrollment for the class is about evenly divided between boys and girls.
"There are just a few more girls than boys," she said.
* The community center will host a basketball clinic on Jan. 18 and 25. Although the official deadline to register for the clinic has passed, Thornton said players can still register, but will not receive a T-shirt.
* A guitar class will be held on Monday's from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m starting on Feb. 10. There is an $80 fee for the 12-week class. Students must bring their own guitar.
