Bronaugh girls fall in tournament opener
GOLDEN CITY, Mo. -- The Bronaugh Lady Wildcats dropped their opener in the Golden City girls' basketball tournament Monday night. Third-seeded Lockwood prevailed, 59-36, over the Lady Wildcats, who were seeded sixth.
The loss put Bronaugh into Wednesday's consolation bracket for a 5 p.m. game against Golden City. Golden City lost its opening-round matchup against Liberal by a final score of 59-8, to set up Wednesday's contest.
Should Bronaugh prevail in that game, the Wildcats would stay alive to play Friday, at 4 p.m., in the consolation finals against the upper bracket, which includes Jasper, Everton, Greenfield and Dadeville.
Lockwood took control from the opening tip, building a 15-6 lead after 8 minutes. Bronaugh was unable to catch up in the second quarter and trailed, 29-15, at halftime.
The third quarter was more of the same, with the Lady Wildcats being outscored, 16-5, falling behind, 45-20.
Bronaugh put together its best quarter of the game in the fourth, breaking free for 16 points. Even so, the Lady Wildcats were only able to shave off two points from the deficit.
Martell Moore tossed in 17 points to key Bronaugh in the losing effort. Courtney Conner added seven, Amanda Raper four, Heather Baker and Taylor Stratford three and Lora Shaw two.
In Monday's other games, top-seeded Jasper rolled past Everton by a final score of 71-23, while fifth-seeded Dadeville upset fourth-seeded Greenfield, 44-41. Four more games were on the schedule Tuesday night, but those results were not available at press time.
