Nevada boys defeat Colgan
PITTSBURG, Kan. -- Brandon Barker's 3-pointer in the final minute put the Nevada Tigers varsity basketball team ahead to stay in a 45-41 victory over the Panthers of St. Mary's Colgan Tuesday night.
The Panthers led, 41-39, with just a little bit more than 40 seconds left in the fourth quarter when Barker made his trey from the right wing and the Tigers closed out the win that snapped a three-game losing skid. Barker led Nevada's offense with 14 points.
Luke Marquardt led Colgan with 15 points, but the Panthers made only five of their 16 attempts at the free-throw line, while the Tigers hit 13 of 18 charity toss attempts. There were seven ties and 11 lead changes in the game and Tigers head coach John McNeley said he was pleased to see his team fight off adversity to claim the victory.
The Panthers won Tuesday evening's preliminary games, taking the junior varsity game, 48-34, and the freshman game, 65-43. In the freshman game, Patrick Ferry led the offensive effort with 15 points, while Matt Sommer wasn't far behind as he finished with 13, despite playing just two quarters.
With the win, Nevada improved to 3-6 on the year, while Colgan fell to 5-2. The Tigers varsity and JV teams are scheduled to get back into action Thursday night, hosting Kansas City Center inside Wynn Gymnasium at Nevada High School.
The first game on the night's schedule is set to tip off at 6 p.m.
