Panthers top Bronaugh in tournament play
GOLDEN CITY, Mo. -- In a low-scoring game between rivals, Sheldon edged Bronaugh in the opening round of the Golden City Boys' Basketball Tournament, 42-34.
Sheldon advanced to play Jasper, the other bracket half winner with a 65-53 victory over Everton. That game was scheduled for Thursday, but those results were not available at press time.
Bronaugh dropped into the loser's bracket to face Everton, also on Thursday.
The upper bracket saw Liberal and Dadeville pick up victories to advance to Thursday's second round, while Golden City was to meet Lockwood Thursday, in the consolation round.
It was Bronaugh that actually led at the first break, 8-7, before Sheldon edged ahead with a 13-11 difference in the second period to take a 20-19 halftime lead.
The Wildcats went cold in the third frame as Sheldon's defense proved to be a factor, resulting in a 10-2 difference and a 30-21 lead, heading into the final quarter.
Bronaugh picked back up the pace with 13 points in the fourth quarter, but Sheldon pretty much matched that, netting 12, to stay on top.
Reed Worsley paced the winners with 15 points. Zach Enochs added 11. Rounding out the scoring were Micah Swanson with six, Corey Baney with four, and Trenton Heckadon and Jacob McCartney three.
Jacob Hendrix paced Bronaugh with 10. Justin Hudson added nine, Thomas Kerbs seven, Cole Diggins six, and Bryce Whitworth two.
