Hume considers adding teachers

After the retirement of special education teacher Scherry Rupprecht, the Hume school district will need to hire a special education teacher and possibly another elementary teacher.
Superintendent David Quick told the Board of Education of the need for additional teachers at its meeting on Jan. 8.
"There will be some moving around of elementary teachers next year to help with their professional growth," Quick said. "The teachers have been positive about the upcoming changes. We will also need a new reading series next year."
Quick said the administration is continuing to develop a plan for Hume to become a school-wide Title I program to give more flexibility to its education program.
"In a building-wide program, every elementary teacher is a Title I teacher and will be given assistance as needed to meet the area identified for focus for each year," he said. "We should know by late February if we get approval."
He also reminded the board members three seats are open for election in April. No one has filed yet.
In other business, the board voted 7-0 to approve Quick as superintendent with no change in salary next year. For the past four years the superintendent's salary has been $72,000.
Quick updated the board on the make-up days for snow days -- Feb. 17, March 7, March 10 and April 18 -- and the spring bus inspections which are scheduled for March 4.
He added, now the weather has cleared, he would have someone re-caulk the seam of the northeast door of the gym to stop the leak.
