Space is still available in the upcoming Annie's Project course, but the registration window is closing.
The Vernon County Extension Office is sponsoring a seven-week farm management seminar for women, which begins Jan. 28. Annie's Project works to help women in agriculture become better acquainted with all portions of farm management. Land ownership, taxes, contracts, agriculture laws and insurance will all be topics of discussion, along with other business management skills.
Registration for the weekly seminar ends on Wednesday, and the class is limited to 20 women. County Program Director Pat Miller said several seats are still available. She said that the course has been successful in the past and that participants have enjoyed it, including several women from Vernon County.
Miller said because farm duties are often shared between family members, it can be difficult for women who lose spouses to manage the business on their own.
"A lot of times, things are kind of delegated, and one person may not know about the other part," she said. "As far as knowing all the ins and outs of programs, leases and the business end of things, many times, women are out of the whole picture."
The seminar will include group discussions and activities. Business and agriculture specialists with the extension will provide presentations on related topics and be available to answer questions.
A registration fee of $75 is required and covers class materials. Those who are experiencing financial hardship may receive assistance with the cost.
Sessions for Annie's Project will be held in the Crowder College computer lab, and will last about two hours each. Those interested in participating should contact the extension office to register.
