SHELDON -- The Sheldon Panthers and Lady Panthers got back into action Friday night, hoping to continue their winning ways as they hosted the Hornets and Lady Hornets of Hume High School on Homecoming night.

Head coach Tyler Judd's Panthers accomplished that goal, winning their 11th game in 14 attempts this season by a final score of 59-24, but head coach Jason Irwin's Lady Panthers weren't as fortunate. In the girls' game, Hume prevailed by a final score of 42-29.

The Lady Hornets took control of the night's first varsity contest right from the start, opening up a 10-2 lead after the opening period. The Lady Panthers were able to keep pace a bit better in the second quarter, but head coach Delanya Thompson's Lady Hornets still extended their lead by three as they won the quarter, 11-8, to take a 21-10 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Hume's Kaitlee Metcalf tries for three of her seven points in Friday night's win over the Sheldon Lady Panthers.

The Lady Panthers cut into that lead a little bit in the third quarter, outscoring the visitors, 5-4, but that was as close as it got. Both teams had their best offensive effort of the night in the contest's final 8 minutes, as Hume won the fourth quarter, 18-14, to secure the 13-point victory.

Megan Sutcliffe paced the winners with 17 points and was joined in double figures by Brooke Best, who finished the night with 10. Kaitlee Metcalf added seven, while Madison Cannon had six and Hope Yarick rounded out Hume's scoring with two.

For the Lady Panthers, all but one player on the roster got into the scoring column on the night. Destiny Shelton led the offensive effort with 11 points, followed by Logan Lamb with seven, Kylie Seaton with three, and Lindsey Turner, Dani Hibbitts, Kylie Leavell and Amy Brzuchowski with two apiece.

Sheldon's Zach Enochs shoots for two of his eight points in Friday night's Homecoming win over the Hume Hornets.

Things went much better for the home team in the boys' game, as the Panthers worked their way to a 17-11 lead after the opening period and never looked back. Head coach Justin Wehar's Hornets simply couldn't keep up with the high-powered Sheldon offense as the Panthers took a 30-15 advantage into the locker room at halftime, after a 13-4 second-quarter opened up the game.

Things just got worse for Hume in the third quarter as Judd's squad had its best offensive showing of the night, outscoring the opposition, 22-7, to take a 30-point lead into the contest's final 8 minutes. From that point on, it was simply a matter of running out the clock and that was exactly what the Panthers did on their way to the 35-point victory.

Reed Worsley led the offensive effort for the Panthers with 19 points and was joined in double figures by Trenton Heckadon with 12 and Micah Swanson with 11. Zach Enochs added eight, while Corey Baney had seven and Nick Guerro finished with two.

Sheldon's Logan Lamb shoots for two of her seven points in Friday's Homecoming loss to the Hume Lady Hornets.

For the Hornets, Cain Crawford led the offensive effort with eight points, followed by Riley Patton with six. Billy Thompson and Jake Ham each finished with two, while Chris Ahrens and Dakota Thornburg had one apiece.

With the win, the Panthers improved to 11-3 on the year and were scheduled to get right back into action against Mack's Creek, in the Osceola Tournament, Monday. The Lady Panthers were scheduled to be in action at Osceola on Monday, as well, also taking on Mack's Creek.

Hume's squads were scheduled to get into tournament play Monday, as well, in Archie. The Hornets were scheduled to open the tournament against Rich Hill, while the Lady Hornets took on Archie.
