Nevada boys fall in tourney play
FRONTENAC, Kan. -- The Tigers of Fort Scott High School jumped ahead early and never looked back on the way to a 66-50 win over Nevada Saturday, in the boys' fifth-place game of the Raider Kansas National Guard Invitational Tournament at Frontenac High School.
Fort Scott's 6-foot, 11-inch senior Jack Olin scored eight points in the first quarter to help the winners build a 16-9 lead after the first 8 minutes and the Tiger put the game away by outscoring Nevada, 23-11, during the second quarter for a 39-17 advantage at halftime. Olin led the Fort Scott Tigers with 16 points and Mason Knopp added 10 in the Tigers' fifth victory in 11 games this season.
Devion Leavell led Nevada with 16 points, but head coach John McNeley's squad saw its record slip to 4-9.
Nevada jumps right back into tournament play Tuesday night, when the fifth-seeded Tigers challenge fourth-seeded Holden at 6 p.m., in the 89th annual Clinton Boys' Basketball Tournament.
In Saturday's other boys' play at Frontenac, Oklahoma City Douglass won its second straight title with an 84-55 win over Riverton, Kan. Winfield, Kan., downed LaCygne-Prairie View, 54-33, for third place and McDonald County edged Frontenac, 51-47, for seventh place.
Webb City's Lady Cardinals won the girls' title with a 73-59 win over Blue Valley Southwest, Frontenac's Lady Raiders outscored Oklahoma City Classen, 54-33, for third, Fort Scott's Lady Tigers downed Kansas City's Hogan Prep, 69-48, in the fifth-place game and Prairie View's Lady Buffaloes shaded Baxter Springs, 28-21, in the seventh-place game.
