Athletes will show basketball skills at weekend tourney

Twenty different teams from as far as Kansas City will compete in a Special Olympics invitational tournament in Nevada on Saturday.
The tournament will begin at 9 a.m., weather permitting, and include a day of basketball games and individual skills competitions. The tournament will start with an opening ceremony at the Ella Maxwell Performing Arts Center, and awards will be given out at the auditorium throughout the afternoon.
Basketball games will be split into five-on-five and three-on-three half court games. Games will be held in the Nevada High School gyms.
For the individual skills portion of the tournament, athletes will compete at spot shooting, dribbling and other activities. Individual tournaments will be held in the Truman Elementary gymnasium.
Athletes will be served lunch and have a variety of activities to do between games, such as bingo and movie watching.
All tournament games are open to the public for free, and a concession stand will be on site for hungry fans.
