Enjoy the indoor weather

Saturday, February 8, 2014

Hi neighbors. Nippy weather continues and all that "snow fun" is getting old, even for the children.

There is always a lot to do where the heaters work though.

Bundle up and take the family out (when the roads are safe) to visit some local businesses and indoor attractions.

How about the public library? There is entertainment there for everyone. Computers to use, a children's library to browse through, and while the kids do that, the parents can sit in the reading area and catch up on some of the nations best magazines and newspapers.

Take the family to the genealogy research room just behind the checkout desk area. It won't take long to get lost in all the history, family history books and research tips on doing genealogy research.

When you finish looking around, the fun continues as you can take books, audio books and even videos home to enjoy.

You might consider getting some of those annual checkups done while there is so little to do outdoors. It will be easier now than in the middle of summer activities anyway.

Don't forget the community center for some family fun. There is a huge gym for some running and basketball, volleyball, rope skipping, etc. A great way to get some of that energy worn off those housebound children! Call ahead to make certain the gym is available though. If it isn't, there are games to play -- pool, table hockey, etc. If it's been a while since you played these, you will be pleasantly surprised at how much fun you and your family will have spending time together in friendly competition.

If you are a little older you can step into the senior center just across the parking lot from the community center, just right next door to the library.

There are games to play there, people to visit with and a good hot lunch served every day.

All this within one city block! And all are just around the corner from the Public Square.

Window-shopping may not be very appealing in minus degree temperatures, but the buildings are close together and hopping in and out from one to the other isn't too demanding, for the younger shoppers at least.

The courthouse has the extension center with flyers teaching all types of crafts, gardening tips (spring is just around the corner -- time to plan that garden and landscaping) -- and other agriculture, home maintenance and food preparation and storage tips.

Stop in at the city's animal shelter and visit with cats and dogs that could use a few minutes of quality human contact.

Although Nevada is known for its parks and outdoor activities, there is a tremendous amount of free fun in well-heated local businesses.

Until the next time friends, remember, winter is getting to be pretty wearing on us now, but we don't have to hunker down and wait for warmer weather. When travel is safe, get out and see what Nevada has to offer.
