Hume's Kaitlee Metcalf shoots for three of her 10 points in Friday night's Homecoming loss to the Montrose Lady Jays.

HUME -- The Hume Hornets and Lady Hornets basketball teams made their return to Larry Berry Gymnasium Friday night, taking on Montrose on Homecoming Night.

Though the Hornets and Lady Hornets entered the night with high hopes -- as all teams do on Homecoming Night -- Montrose ultimately came out of the night as the spoiler, taking both games. Montrose opened the night with a 49-30 win in the girls' game and capped off the sweep with a 65-40 victory in the boys' contest.

Things started out well for the home team in the opening period as the Lady Hornets were able to gain a slight edge. Though it was far from a comfortable advantage, the Lady Hornets won the period, nonetheless, and went into the first break with a 12-9 advantage.

Hume's Cain Crawford shoots for three of his 16 points in Friday night's loss to Montrose.

The Lady Jays made up the deficit in the second quarter as the Hume offense slowed a bit, outscoring the Lady Hornets, 9-6 to take an 18-18 deadlock into the locker room at halftime.

Hume's offense slowed considerably more in the third quarter as head coach Delanya Thompson's squad managed just two points. Montrose took full advantage of those struggles, putting up 12 points to take control of the game.

That steady improvement for the Montrose offense continued into the fourth quarter as the Lady Jays had their best offensive showing of the night in that frame, outscoring Thompson's squad. 19-10, to take the victory.

Hume's Austin Sullins shoots for two of his six points in Friday night's loss to Montrose.

Hope Yarick and Kaitlee Metcalf led the offensive effort for the Lady Hornets in the contest as they each finished with 10 points. Madison Cannon added six and Brooke Best and Megan Sutcliffe each finished the night with two. Audry Collins led all scorers with 21 points in the contest for the Lady Jays.

Things were much the same for Hume's boys as head coach Justin Wehar's Hornets dropped a 25-point decision.

"I was pleased with our effort (in) this game," Wehar said. Overall, we played pretty well against a good Montrose team."

Much like their female counterparts, the Hornets opened the contest with a three-point lead after the opening quarter. In the first 8 minutes of the contest, both squads seemed fairly even, allowing the Hornets to win the first quarter, 13-10.

Even more effectively than in the girls' game, however, Montrose was able to find its rhythm, from that point on. The Blue Jays finished the opening half outscoring the Hornets, 17-4, taking a 27-17 lead into the locker room at the break.

As the second half began, that lead simply got bigger as the intensity with which the Hornets opened the game quickly began to wane. Montrose wasted little time taking advantage, winning the third quarter, 17-9, to take a 43-26 advantage into the contest's final 8 minutes.

The story was much the same in the final period as both squads put forth their best offensive efforts of the night in the fourth quarter. Montrose's best effort was once again better than Hume's however, as the Blue Jays won the period, 22-14, to take the victory.

"We started with a high intensity level," Wehar said. "However, we could not sustain the intensity throughout the second half."

Cain Crawford led the offensive effort for the Hornets on the night, as he finished with 16 points. Sonic Drive-In co-Player of the Game from the consolation round of the Archie Tournament Billy Thompson finished with a career-high eight.

Austin Sullins and Riley Patton each finished with six, while Dakota Thornburg and Jake Ham had two points apiece. Jacob Engeman led all scorers with 27 for Montrose.

The Hornets and Lady Hornets were both scheduled to get right back into action Monday, in the Golden Valley Vernon County Conference Tournament, at Hume High School. Those results were not available at press time.
