Ideas sought for lake improvements

Work crews have been clearing brush from around Katy Allen Lake for several days in preparation for any future upgrades at the lakefront.
The Vernon County Commission said that the improvements process is just beginning, residents can help by submitting their ideas for upgrades at and around the lake.
Presiding Commissioner Bonnie McCord said that one of the planned improvements includes a new access road for lake visitors.
"We are going to put another road in to keep traffic away from the ballpark," she said. That new road will relieve congestion during the summer when families and spectators are at the fields, and when many county residents will be out and about near the lake.
Northern Commissioner Neal Gerster said some ideas received from the community include adding campsites and walking trails.
Sydney Allen, regional planner for Kaysinger Basin, said the lake's improvements are in the very beginning stages. Kaysinger Basin is working with the county commission throughout the process, and is currently looking to identify grants and other funding options for possible projects.
Allen said that a meeting held at the fairgrounds late last year gave commissioners and Kaysinger Basin an idea of what residents would like the lake area to offer. Those ideas make it easier to identify potential funding.
More public meetings are planned for the spring, which will give everyone -- residents, commissioners and planners -- a chance to visit the lake and conceptualize more ideas.
"I think there's a ton of opportunities out there," Allen said. "We just have to sit down and see where to go from here."
