Knights defeat Montrose at home
WALKER -- The Northeast Vernon County Knights baseball team found itself in a tough battle Monday, taking on the Blue Jays of Montrose High School, at Northeast Vernon County High School. In a game that needed an extra inning to be decided, however, the Knights came out on top by a final score of 6-5.
The Knights drew first blood in the contest, plating a run in the opening frame. The Blue Jays got that run back in the top of the fourth, but the tie didn't last long.
The Northeast Vernon County offense exploded for three runs in the home half of the fifth, seemingly grabbing hold of the contest. Montrose wasn't going down without a fight, however, and got two of those runs back in the top of the very next inning.
With just a one-run lead in bottom of the sixth, the Knights tacked on a little bit of insurance with one run of their own, but for the second time in the contest, the Blue Jays made a comeback, plating two more runs in the seventh inning. That forced the two squads to play one more inning, as the regulation seven ended in a 5-5 tie.
After shutting the Blue Jays out in the top of the eighth, the Knights took advantage of the opportunity presented to them, bringing home the winning run in the home half of the frame.
