Nevada golf wins Neosho tournament

NEOSHO, Mo. -- Adding yet another feather in their caps during what has become a very successful season, the Nevada Tigers golf team went back out on the road Thursday, and came home with the first-place team trophy in the Neosho Kick-Off Tournament, with a final team score of 298.
"A 298 is a good score," Tigers head coach Brian Leonard said. "It was a great day."
The tournament was played in teams of six, with two players competing in an individual tournament, two playing best ball and the other two playing a scramble format. Nevada's best ball team of Patrick Ferry and Jacob Hammontree finished first with a final score of 75, while the scramble team of Keegan Bell and Andrew Quitno finished second at 71.
Levi Palmer finished second in the individual competition with a 76, while John Quitno was third, also at 76. The scorecard playoff system was used to break the tie and Palmer ultimately came out on top after both players shot par on the sixth hole and Palmer won No. 11 with a second par to Quitno's bogey.
Thursday's tournament is the third the Tigers have one this season, which is a first for Leonard's career. In his 10-year tenure at Nevada High School, no boys' team has won more than one tournament in a season.
Next on the schedule for the Tigers is another first, as they are scheduled to compete in the Ozark Invitational next Thursday. As the season progresses, excitement is growing over the potential of this year's team and next week's tournament will be played at the site of the state tournament, which led to a substantial part of Leonard's motivation for entering a tournament his squad has never played, on a completely unfamiliar course.
"The boys are getting excited," he said. "They're a great group of young men with great attitudes."
Tee times in next week's tournament are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., at Fremont Hills Country Club.
