Cottey Comets softball drops three more games
East Central College swept a softball doubleheader from the Cottey College Comets Saturday, at Union, Mo., 16-2 and 17-2.
In the opening game, the Comets found themselves in an early 4-0 hole and attempted a rally in the third inning, coming up with their only two runs of the contest. In the second game, East Central jumped out to a 16-0 lead before the Comets played their only two runs in the fourth inning.
Second-year Comet Selena Gochenour was 1-for-3 with one run scored and two RBIs and Christine Nevin was 2-for-3 in the first game, while former Bronaugh Lady Wildcat Susie Hartman was 1-for-2 with two RBIs in the nightcap.
The Lady Falcons improved to 23-16 with the wins, while the Comets slipped to 0-22 for the season, heading into a scheduled doubleheader against North Arkansas, at Vanek Family Field, Monday. The Lady Pioneers won the first game, 15-8, and the second game was called off because an injury left the Comets unable to field a full team for the nightcap.
In that contest, the Comets not only put up three runs in the first inning to keep themselves in it early, but also played a full seven innings for the first time this season. It looked as though the Comets would be put down in five as the Lady Pioneers opened up a 12-3 lead after the top of the fourth inning, but head coach Shelli Stanley's squad wasn't going down without a fight and put up three more runs in the home half of the fourth to extend the game.
Through the remainder of the contest, North Arkansas outscored the Comets, 3-2, to take the eight run victory.
The Comets are scheduled to visit Harrison, Ark. Thursday, for another twin bill against the Lady Pioneers.
