Nevada baseball trounces Girard
GIRARD, Kan. -- The Nevada Tigers baseball team scored 14 runs on 15 hits in a 14-4 victory Thursday, in a five-inning game against the Trojans of Girard High School.
The Tigers wasted little time getting to the Girard pitching staff and not only did it early in the contest, but often, as well. All but four of the Tigers' runs in the contest came in the first three innings, as the Nevada offense had its way with Girard's pitching staff.
After plating four runs in the first inning, one in the second and five in the third, the Tigers held a 10-3 lead, heading into the fourth inning. Girard plated its final run of the day in the home half of the fourth before the Tigers went on another rally, plating the game's last four runs in the top of the fifth.
Andy Heathman and Brett Norton led Nevada's offense with three hits each, and Heathman drove in three runs with a solo home run and a double. Lane Ketterman was 2-for-3 with a three-run homer and Taylor Manes was 2-for-4, scoring two runs.
Clay Regers pitched the first four innings, allowing four runs -- two earned -- on six hits with three strikeouts and four walks to earn the victory. Heathman finishing the game on the mound, allowing no runs on no hits with three strikeouts in one inning.
The Tigers also won the junior varsity game, 13-3.
With the win, the Tigers improved to 6-2 on the season. Head coach Danny Penn's varsity and JV squads were scheduled to get right back into action Friday, heading back out on the road to take on the Indians of Seneca High School, but those results were not available at press time.
