Area high school sporting events postponed

Wednesday, April 30, 2014

Thanks to the latest round of wet weather to move through the area, a number of local high school sporting events were called off Tuesday.

Of the three area schools affected by the latest round of rain, Nevada High School was hit the hardest. According to athletic director John McNeley, three different Nevada High School sporting events were called off on the day.

Those events included a varsity/junior varsity baseball doubleheader at El Dorado Springs High School, a freshman baseball game against the Indians of Seneca -- also on the road -- and a tennis match between the Tigers and visiting Carthage. No make-up dates had been announced for any of those contests, as of Tuesday evening.

Hume High School wasn't far behind Nevada, in terms of the number of sporting events the Hornets and Lady Hornets were forced to postpone, due to rain showers that dampened the area throughout most of the day. Not only was a baseball game between the Hornets and the Panthers of Sheldon High School postponed, but the Lady Hornets' opening round game against Lone Jack in the Class 1, District 15 softball tournament was pushed back a day.

No make-up date has been announced for Tuesday's baseball game -- which was to be played at Hume -- but the Lady Hornet's are now scheduled to take on the Jennies at 6 p.m., Wednesday, at Lone Jack, weather and field conditions permitting.

Next on the schedule for Nevada's varsity and JV baseball teams is Wednesday, when they host the Vikings of Lakeland High School, while the tennis team will be back in action at the Bolivar Tournament Wednesday and the freshman baseball team is set to host Joplin on Saturday, weather and field conditions permitting. For Hume and Sheldon, the next baseball action on the schedule is set for May 16-20, when the Hornets and Panthers compete in the Class 1, District 7 tournament.
