Nevada tennis falls in district tournament
WARRENSBURG. Mo. -- The Nevada Tigers tennis team opened the Class 1, District 12 team tournament at the Warrensburg Community Center Tuesday, and came home with mixed results.
The Tigers entered the tournament as the fifth seed, behind undefeated Warrensburg, Knob Noster, Harrisonville and Clinton. That put head coach Clayton Wheeler's squad in a first-round match against Clinton, with a trip to the semifinals on the line.
The Tigers got all they could handle from Clinton, but ultimately came out on top by a final score of 5-4. Nevada's five individual wins in the match came in the Nos. 1, 4 and 6 singles, as well as the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles matches.
In singles competition, Skyler Laning defeated Riley Johnson, 6-1, 6-1, while Luat Vu beat Braeden Westhusing, 2-6, 7-5, 7-5, and Nathan McCall took down Tyler Grimes, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3). In doubles competition, the team of Laning and Anthony Do defeated Westhusing and Nick Valentino, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, while Vu and Jordan Sheehy knocked off Johnson and Grimes, 6-4, 6-3.
The Tigers came back later in the day and took on Warrensburg, but that match ended very differently. Warrensburg won all five matches that were played, knocking Nevada out of the tournament.
The Tigers were scheduled to return to Warrensburg Thursday, to compete in the Class 1, District 12 Individual Tournament, but those results were not available at press time.
