Tigers fall in district play
BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The Nevada Tigers baseball team's 2014 season came to a sudden and disappointing end Monday afternoon, with a 2-1 upset loss to the fourth-seeded Tigers of Warrensburg High School in the Class 4, District 12 Tournament semifinals.
Warrensburg sophomore Cody Roop held the Tigers -- who brought a .343 team batting average into Monday's contest -- to four hits and a first-inning run that scored on a double by center fielder Lane Ketterman. Tanner Ridge put Warrensburg ahead to stay with a two-run home run to right-center field in the top of the fourth inning.
Grant Wolfe doubled for Nevada with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but Roop retired the next two batters to end the game and Nevada's 19-4 season -- the best in program history. Senior Easton Mitchell started on the mound for Nevada and allowed just four hits and the two runs over seven innings for his only loss of the season in six decisions.
With the win, Warrensburg improved to 9-5 and returns to Bolivar at 5 p.m., Wednesday, to play second-seeded Clinton in the district championship game. The Cardinals rallied for a 9-7 win over Bolivar in Monday's other semifinal game.
